Tamayo Is a Modern Mexican Escape in the Heart of Denver

After a top-to-bottom renovation, Tamayo has officially reopened its doors — just in time to remind us why it’s been a cornerstone of Denver’s dining scene for nearly 25 years. Located at the corner of 14th and Larimer in historic Larimer Square, the two-story restaurant has long served as both a culinary destination and a downtown landmark. Now, with its sleek new look, it offers something even more enticing: the ambiance of a White Lotus-style vacation, right in the middle of the city.

Chef Richard Sandoval, the acclaimed restaurateur behind more than 60 restaurants worldwide, launched Tamayo in 2001 as a love letter to his heritage. Born and raised in Mexico City, Sandoval brings his passion for authentic Mexican cuisine to life with a global perspective. At Tamayo, he blends earthy, complex flavors with innovative techniques and international ingredients, reimagining traditional dishes in fresh, modern ways.

The updated space is bright and inviting, ideal for both lively group dinners and intimate date nights. Whether you’re sitting inside the spacious dining room or enjoying the energy on the rooftop deck with sweeping Rocky Mountain views, there’s no bad seat in the house.

The food? Elevated and worth the hefty price. Start with the Traditional Guacamole, served with surprisingly addictive charred tlayudas, and pair it with a Traditional Margarita, crafted with monte álban silver and fresh citrus. The drink menu is impressive, featuring more than 100 agave-based spirits and a selection of hand-crafted cocktails that reflect Mexico’s vibrant tequila culture. For a zero-proof option, the Garden Grove mocktail — made with Seedlip Garden, black pepper, cucumber, basil, lime and aquafaba — is refreshing and beautifully balanced.

Mains range from bold to surprising. A standout: the Jackfruit Tinga Tacos, a vegan-friendly dish layered with black bean purée, avocado, pico de gallo and pickled red onion. These tacos hold their own beside more traditional meat and seafood options, showcasing Sandoval’s skill at catering to modern palates without sacrificing depth of flavor.

End your meal with the Churros, a fan-favorite served with rich cajeta and “grandma’s chocolate sauce.” They’re crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and every bite as indulgent as it sounds.

Tamayo isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a flavor induced experience. It’s where heritage meets innovation, a place where Denver locals and visitors alike can gather for elevated Mexican fare in a setting that’s both luxurious and welcoming. Add it to your downtown itinerary and we promise you won’t be disappointed.
