June Monthly Mix 24

As spring burns into summer our music take over this month comes from a young artist going by Emeline Scales. Her dedication to music mixed with Appalachia roots and pop influences produces brutally honest and catchy love songs. Scales is a long time musician who puts deep feeling into every melody and word. Not so Bad After All is Scales’ first full album, encapsulating the chaos of young love and all the emotions that come along with it.

“I write music for the purpose of telling stories, whether it be my own stories or the stories of others. I seek the same in the music I listen to. I’m drawn to storytellers who are able to encapsulate the intimate feelings of being human, and this collection of playlists touches on a few of those emotions.” – Scales

To create a home

“Perhaps it is my femininity, perhaps it is my strong familial bonds, perhaps it is an innate human desire, but I believe we are meant to live in community with one another. We are meant to love the people around us with everything we have, cheering them on as they stand on our shoulders. This is a collection of songs on the dreams I have of communal living, of having a home splitting at the seams with laughter, food, and love.”

To love is to hurt

“These songs touch on the experience of loving another person, for better or for worse. I always assumed that people became happy once they fell in love, but these artists have touched on the impossibility of a happily ever after, and instead focus on the complexity and sadness that accompanies love. These songs also touch on the toxicity of love in the way I have experienced it, from my yearning for attention in any form to an addiction to the idea of a person. To love is to hurt, but isn’t that why we do it?

to be a girl pt 1

“The power, insecurity, and anger that accompanies girlhood, as portrayed through pop anthems. Artists like Chappell Roan and Renee Rapp have been a consistent source of the perfect scream-singing content, making me feel seen, understood, and able to get every ounce of energy out. In embracing my femininity, these artists have This playlist is for hyping yourself up in the mirror, pre-gaming, screaming in the car, and releasing any and all anger into the ether.”

to be a girl pt 2

There was no way to encapsulate girlhood in one genre, so a second playlist was necessary, highlighting the profound fear, isolation, and sadness of being a woman in this world. These songs feel ripped from a diary of the feelings I’ve never been able to name. These artists have taken the deep pit of dread in my gut and gingerly pulled it apart into strands of understanding, weaving them into a tapestry of experience. These songs are painfully relatable, perfect for existential pondering and staring at your bedroom ceiling.”
