Color of Fashion Season 4: SHYE

SHYE, a fashion brand founded by New York City-based designer Sunghye Park, is defined by dark silhouettes and otherworldly pieces. Deriving from its namesake, meaning “different direction,” SHYE intends to offer garments that will instill freedom in the wearer; the freedom to express oneself, the freedom to embrace a unique aesthetic and the freedom to wear what makes them feel their absolute best.

Sunghye will be traveling to Denver for the first time to showcase a collection at Color of Fashion’s Season 4 Showcase on Saturday, September 28. This runway experience is the first presentation of the entire SHYE collection, including archival pieces and collaborative efforts with other designers in the fashion industry. The audience can expect to see Sunghye’s inner creativity and process displayed on the runway.

Born in South Korea, Sunghye moved to New York City at age 20. At the time, they were just another fashion student with big dreams and plans brewing inside. Fast forward to now, SHYE has evolved to become a striking brand offering thoughtfully constructed pieces from various materials including leather, mesh and more.

“Fashion makes me feel different, act different and think different,” said Sungyhe.

Although defining differences is important, SHYE designs are also largely influenced by Sunghye’s surroundings. “I am thinking about what kind of cultural impacts that I can provide to the audience, how the brand experience is applying to individuals.”

While there are many things in life that are out of our control, Sunghye hones in on the fact that fashion is something the wearer can own and define. It is human nature to crave control, so why not capitalize on that through fashion design? “People can choose and build their own aesthetic through mixing and matching single or multiple items and expressing themselves,” said Sunghye.

The name SHYE almost contradicts itself, because Sunghye’s pieces are quite the opposite of “shy.” They are bold, daring, and imitate extraterrestrial emotions for both the wearer and the viewer. “My aesthetic has a lot of contradictory stories and deep meanings [of being human],” Sunghye added.
