Love Stings – Denver’s Sour Magic Blooms With New Single “Black Roses”
Named one of Colorado’s top 10 acts by CRP’s Indie 102.3, Sour Magic delves into the bittersweet beauty of unrequited love with their new single “Black Roses,” a preview of their second album, The Hive. Scheduled for release on Friday, March 29, “Black Roses” explores unrequited love through the mosaic eyes of a drone bee yearning for union with his Queen, knowing his death will be the price of love.
“Black Roses” is Sour Magic’s most joint creation to date, born from the first collaborative lyric writing session in the band’s history. The song features soaring lead vocals of their newest edition, Eliseo Salinas, and backing vocals from long-time member Mauro Hernandez.
“When I first heard the song, my mind was instantly flooded with vocal melodies. I let the music tell me what it wanted and the rest of the song fell into place” explained Salinas. Lyrically, the track explores dueling themes of love and pain as well as longing and death. Imbued with the introspective lyricism characteristic of classic rock and the catchy melodies of the So-Cal surf scene, “Black Roses” is a multi-dimensional addition to the band’s evolving discography and poetic exploration of the human experience. Keeping things local, Dan Timmers recorded, produced and mixed the track with additional mastering by Gabe Wolf.
Sour Magic quickly became synonymous with gripping sounds and energetic performances in Denver. The group first captivated audiences in 2022 with their debut single, “Indigo, ” which continues to mesmerize the scene with textural sound. Local magazines and radio stations across the state quickly spread the word of the group in time for their debut album, “Forbidden Fruit” in June 2023.
Now established on Spotify and in the local scene, Sour Magic has found its fan base seeking existential lyricism and anything from Western twang to surf rock.
This new song marks the continuation of Sour Magic’s versatility and sonic diversity. Following the high-octane anthem “Elevator,” Sour Magic demonstrates their range and maturity with “Black Roses,” still flying high, but floating upon more mellow winds and melodies.
“Black Roses” will be available on all major streaming platforms starting March 29. Give Sour Magic a follow and catch the intoxicating energy live as they perform across Colorado. Upcoming shows at Black Buzzard on April 11, Boulder’s Club 156 on May 2 and the Cirque Du Lune festival in Denver on May 25 will not disappoint!
